چکیده

This study based on longitudinal Zeeman effect magnetograms and spectral line scans investigates the dependence of solar surface magnetic fields on the spectral line used and the way the line is sampled in order to estimate the magnetic flux emerging above the solar atmosphere and penetrating to the corona from magnetograms of the Mt. Wilson 150-foot tower synoptic program (MWO). We have compared the synoptic program λ5250Å line of Fe I to the line of Fe I at λ5233Å since this latter line has a broad shape with a profile that is nearly linear over a large portion of its wings. The present study uses five pairs of sampling points on the λ5233Å line. Line profile observations show that the determination of the field strength from the Stokes V parameter or from line bisectors in the circularly polarized line profiles lead to similar dependencies on the spectral sampling of the lines with the bisector method being the less sensitive. We recommend adoption of the field determined with the line bisector method as the best estimate of the emergent photospheric flux and further recommend the use of a sampling point as close to the line core as is practical. The combination of the line profile measurements and the cross-correlation of fields measured simultaneously with λ5250Å and λ5233Å yields a formula for the scale factor δ that multiplies the MWO synoptic magnetic fields. Using ρ as the center-to-limb angle (CLA), a fit to this scale factor is δ = 4.15− 2.82 sin(ρ). Previously δ = 4.5−2.5 sin(ρ) had been used. The new calibration shows that magnetic fields measured by the MDI system on the SOHO spacecraft are equal to 0.619 ± 0.018 times the true value at a center-to-limb position 30. Berger and Lites (2003) found this factor to be 0.64± 0.013 based on a comparison the the Advanced Stokes Polarimeter.

Generation of Alfvén Waves by Small-Scale Magnetic Reconnection in Solar Spicules

Alfvén waves dissipation is an extensively studied mechanism for the coronal heating problem. These waves can be generated by magnetic reconnection and propagated along the reconnected field lines. Here, we study the generation of Alfvén waves at the presence of both steady flow and sheared magnetic field in the longitudinally density stratified of solar spicules. The initial flow is assumed to...

The dependence of the magnetic field strength of a sunspot umbra on its intensity and brightness temperature

A partial decrease of the convective energy by the magnetic field of a sunspot causes the temperature of the magnetized plasma to decrease and this leads to a magneto-hydrostatic equilibrium. Thus, we expect a strong relation between magnetic field strength of a sunspot and its temperature/brightness. Here, we investigate this relation in the umbra of the large sunspot in NOAA10930 using spectr...

How magnetic helicity ejection helps large scale dynamos

There is mounting evidence that the ejection of magnetic helicity from the solar surface is important for the solar dynamo. Observations suggest that in the northern hemisphere the magnetic helicity flux is negative. We propose that this magnetic helicity flux is mostly due to small scale magnetic fields; in contrast to the more systematic large scale field of the 11 year cycle, whose helicity ...

2 00 6 A near - IR line of Mn I as a diagnostic tool of the average magnetic energy in the solar photosphere

A near-IR line of Mn I as a diagnostic tool of the average magnetic energy in the solar photosphere ABSTRACT We report on spectropolarimetric observations of a near-IR line of Mn I located at 15262.702Å whose intensity and polarization profiles are very sensitive to the presence of hyperfine structure. A theoretical investigation of the magnetic sensitivity of this line to the magnetic field un...

Reversals of the solar magnetic dipole in the light of observational data and simple dynamo models

Context. Observations show that the photospheric solar magnetic dipole usually does not vanish during the reversal of the solar magnetic field, which occurs in each solar cycle. In contrast, mean-field solar dynamo models predict that the dipole field does become zero. In a recent paper it was suggested that this contradiction could be explained as a large-scale manifestation of small-scale mag...

Ulysses Observations of the Radial M Agnetic Field Component: Absence of a Lajttude Gradient

The radial component of the solar magnetic field measured at Ulysses as it traveled from the equator in the southern hemisphere has been to -80.2” latitude and returned. The radial component multiplied by the square of the radial distance, i.e., BRr2, averaged over 77 day intervals (three solar rotations) is approximately constant at -3.5 NT and shows no evidence of a dependence on heliographic...
